What politicians want it to mean

Coyuntura (Current Situation/Juncture): A unique situation, never before seen or experienced.

The Empire: The United States.

Neoliberalism: Something very bad.

The Right: Something necessarily negative that can be used to attack your ideological opponents.

The Left: Something entirely benevolent that only you possess ideologically.

Socialism: The government will provide and make sure you are ok.

What it really means

Coyuntura (Current Situation/Juncture): A combination of factors and circumstances that occur at a given time.

The Empire: A collection of many states or territories governed by a supreme ruler or an oligarchy. Some examples:

  • Roman Empire
  • Russian Empire
  • Inca Empire
  • Ottoman Empire

Neoliberalism: A free market with minimal or no state intervention.

The Right: Economic freedom, preservation of traditions, personal responsibility, order and security, and distrust of a large state.

The Left: Emphasis on equality, progressivism, state intervention, collectivism, and social rights.

Socialism: A political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
