Voto En Blanco

Why Voting Blank After Jaime Dunn’s Disqualification May Be a Strategic Mistake

Voting blank can seem like a legitimate form of protest, but in the current context of Bolivian politics, it represents a missed opportunity to influence the election outcome.

Since Jaime Dunn was disqualified from the presidential race, many of his supporters have expressed frustration and distrust toward the electoral process. In response, some sectors have begun to promote the idea of casting a blank vote as a sign of rejection. However, while emotionally understandable, this decision may be counterproductive from a political and strategic perspective.

❌ Blank Votes Don’t Add — But They Shift the Game

In Bolivia, blank and null votes are not counted as valid when calculating the percentages of candidates. This means that by reducing the total number of valid votes, the percentages of the remaining candidates are artificially inflated.

For example, if a candidate receives 400 votes and there are 100 blank votes, the percentage is not 400/500 = 80%, but rather 400/400 = 100%.
The effect is clear: candidates with solid, mobilized bases appear stronger, while those who could have received a strategic vote lose ground.

🎯 A Wasted Opportunity

Supporters of Jaime Dunn shared a common vision — liberal principles, institutionalism, opposition to the current economic model, and a firm stance against corruption. If all those voters choose to cast blank ballots, they are leaving the field wide open for their ideas to be excluded from a second-round scenario or any future political negotiation.

Even without their ideal candidate in the race, other options exist that are closer in values and goals, and they deserve serious consideration.

🧠 A Blank Vote = Choosing Not to Influence

In this context, casting a blank vote is a form of political self-exclusion. It's stepping back and allowing those with more machinery, clientelism, or hardened vote banks to dominate. It’s surrendering precisely when active, calculated citizenship is most needed.

✅ What Should Be Done?

  • Identify the candidate most closely aligned with your principles and priorities.

  • Vote strategically, even if the candidate is not perfect.

  • Organize and mobilize to influence the agenda of the next government or opposition bloc.

This isn’t about betraying your values — it’s about protecting them intelligently.
