Bolivian Park Ranger Reports Harassment and Dismissal for Protecting Natural Reserves

Marcos Uzquiano Howard, a respected Bolivian park ranger known for his dedication to conservation, claims he was unfairly dismissed from his position as head of protection at the Madidi National Park. Uzquiano alleges that his termination on December 31, 2024, was linked to his activism against poaching and illegal mining activities in Bolivia’s protected areas.

Throughout his 20-year career, Uzquiano has been recognized for his efforts in safeguarding biodiversity, receiving international awards for his work. However, he has also faced repeated threats and harassment due to his outspoken stance on environmental crimes.

The Bolivian Ombudsman’s Office has filed a constitutional appeal on Uzquiano’s behalf, leading to a legal ruling ordering his reinstatement. The decision also calls for measures to ensure his safety, as concerns remain over potential retaliation from those involved in illegal activities. This case has drawn significant attention to the challenges faced by environmental defenders in Bolivia.
